A broken spring is the single most common garage door failure — and one of the easiest to identify once you know what to look for.
Signs your spring is broken
- Loud bang from the garage. A snapping spring makes a noise most homeowners describe as “like a firecracker.”
- Door only opens a foot or two. The opener strains against the weight without the spring to help.
- Visible gap in the torsion spring above the door. A healthy spring is tightly wound with no gaps.
- Door slams shut instead of lowering slowly. The spring counterbalances gravity — without it, the door drops fast.
- Cables hanging loose. Broken springs often take out cables in the process.
Do NOT try to open it manually
A typical residential garage door weighs 150-250 lbs. The springs are what let you (or the opener) lift it. Without a working spring, you’re lifting the full weight — a serious injury risk. If the door is closed, leave it closed.
Do NOT try to replace the spring yourself
Torsion springs store enormous kinetic energy under high tension. DIY replacement is the leading cause of garage door injuries — including broken fingers, hospital trips, and worse. Springs run $75-150 for the part; the labor is what keeps you safe.
